90 Major Directors Who Have Made World War Two Films

Certainly the makers of some of the best World War Two films , such as The Great Escape, Where Eagles Dare and Patton,  are not major directors in as much as ‘major’ means ‘discussed in academic film books’. But with no disrespect to those films, I wanted to compile this list focusing on critically-acclaimed auteurs, and showing how so many of them from so many countries have tackled this one subject.

I’ve included films not just about 1939-1945 itself, but also the lead-up to the war and the immediate aftermath if the events depicted are directly relevant. I haven’t included films like Sophie’s Choice which are mainly set in a later time with just flashbacks to the war, but I have included movies like Bertolucci’s 1900, which span many decades, if a significant part of the film covers the war years.
