World Cinema Guide: India (125 Greatest Films 1929-2005)

When I say ‘greatest’ in the title above I mean ‘most critically acclaimed, based on a consensus of opinion’ and for details of how I established that - and why this list only goes up to 2005 - please see ‘World Cinema Guide: Introduction’.

In the alphabetical table of contents at the right you will also find similar lists for other countries: World Cinema Guide China, World Cinema Guide France, World Cinema Guide Germany etc

Note that within this list there is in effect a ‘best of the best’ list: the most critically acclaimed 10-20% of films from this country are marked with a *.

A short note on Indian cinema to help distinguish Bollywood films from Indian art films.

Since there’s a certain amount of cross-over between Bollywood films and ‘serious’ Indian art cinema, I have not attempted to make a clear demarcation between the two. Though many films could easily be classified into one or other of the categories, there are also quite a few that fall somewhere in between. In particular, many Bollywood films don’t adhere to the clichéd image of over-the-top villains and people breaking into song every two minutes, but instead feature realistic acting and controversial themes, and have been critically acclaimed. Having said that, it’s directors like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Mani Kaul, and Shyam Benegal you should look to first if you’re more interested in ‘art cinema’, whereas it’s directors like Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, and Guru Dutt who are a good place to start for those wanting to discover Bollywood cinema.
