400 Famous Foreign Films Rated

The main criteria for inclusion here, other than being famous, was that the film must be in a foreign language. In other words, I haven’t included any films made by foreign directors in English, for example Last Tango in Paris or Blow-Up, but I have included Canadian Films in French and odd American films like Apocalypto and Letters from Iwo Jima. I’ve also included foreign silent films, and foreign films like Spirited Away or Sans Soleil which were released in the US and UK with an English soundtrack.

Most of the titles are the English translations; the only exceptions are certain Italian and French films where the original title is better-known.

The ratings are just my opinions and the rating system is the same as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide. 4 stars is the maximum, and three and a half is also excellent. ‘BOMB’ is the worst. Anything less than 3 stars is usually not worth watching.
