With a director like Hitchcock, who made so many good films, it's easy to forget something like 'Rope'. After all he made at least a dozen films that are more ambitious and better-known. Apart from being famous for seeming to be all one shot for its 80 minutes, it's not a particularly inventive film by Hitch's standards. It's all set in one place, it's mostly about the dialogue, there are no great set-pieces. And yet if Michael Bay ever made a film this good he'd be the critics' darling. And if Lars Von Trier ever made a film this good he'd be the critics' darling, as he is now, but he'd actually deserve the praise.
