Film Versions of 99 Classic 19th Century Novels

This list of classic novels includes novellas and short novels for children, but not short stories or plays. Sometimes there may be little to distinguish ‘novella’ and ‘long short story’ in terms of word-count but if the work was published separately under its own title it’s usually considered a novella, if it’s part of a larger collection it’s generally considered a short story.

Some of these works have been filmed many times in many countries, starting in the silent era. I’ve included only the most famous adaptations and they are all movie, not TV, adaptations.

Of course all film adaptations leave out elements of the original book and make changes, but I’ve used the word ‘loosely’ below to indicate significant alterations of structure or to show that the film-makers have changed the time or place in which the story is set.

I’ve given the novel’s author and year of publication, then the country and year of release of the movie. The title of the film is the same as the book unless otherwise stated.

80 Actor-Directors- with Prominent Movie Careers in Both Fields

The first kind of actor-director to spring to mind are those who, like Chaplin, Woody Allen and Kenneth Branagh, often act in and direct the same movie.

Then there are the film-makers like Robert Redford and Richard Attenborough who have achieved success in both fields but at different periods and who usually don’t mix their roles on one movie.

A third group are those who are still very much associated with one field rather than the other -e.g. Paul Newman with acting, Tarantino with directing- but have made more than just a few forays into the other field. I have included directors like Tarantino if some of their roles are fair-sized speaking parts but not the likes of Hitchcock and Oliver Stone who just have tiny, blink-and-you’ll miss-it cameos in their own films. I have included actors if they have directed at least 4 feature-length movies.

A separate list of actors who’ve directed very occasionally will be coming soon.

  1. Alan Alda
  2. Alan Arkin
  3. Albert Brooks
  4. Anthony Perkins
