Of these to me the best were Silent Movie, Prisoners, Macbeth (1971), The Wolf of Wall Street, Gravity, Bernie, August: Osage County,The Arbor, Redentor, Brave, 12 Years A Slave, (the final half hour of) Suddenly Last Summer, Nebraska, Mission Impossible 3, Hard Eight, The Spirit of ‘45 and Philomena.

A lot of the big films of 2013, like Inside Llewyn Davis, Blue Jasmine, All is Lost and Dallas Buyers Club, I thought were pretty good but nothing outstanding. American Hustle was a real disappointment.

I Am Cuba is a famously lost but rediscovered film made by a Russian crew in Cuba in 1964, though set 1959 or earlier. It has a lot of clunky communist propaganda in it and its depiction of Americans is about as nuanced as a WW2 Hollywood depiction of ‘evil Japs’. The story is a bit too episodic: there are four separate storylines. And the version I watched had an unremovable Russian voice-over which repeats nearly everything said in Spanish, which was annoying. (Apparently it is possible to find versions without that). But still I’d have to recommend it. It has many powerful moments, including a great climax, and amazing camerawork. The film is visually sui generis, with many scenes shot in broad daylight with an infra-red camera (which produces a very strange effect in black and white), or with a fish-eye lens. And there are a couple of stunning tracking/flying shots in it, the likes of which you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a must-see.

Argo was good, but it wasn’t as tense as I’d hoped and I think Ben Affleck’s previous two films are better. Meek's Cutoff was good, but the poor ending undid much of the work done by the main storyline. Once Upon A Time in Anatolia was good, but it too didn’t fully live up to its reputation.

The Deep Blue Sea was the first Terence Davies film I’ve really liked

Lincoln and Beasts of the Southern Wild were the biggest disappointments. The Dark Knight Rises had a great ending but overall was just ‘quite good’ and thus the weakest of the three in that series.

Plus a few old ones which are good if you haven't ever seen them but which maybe I've seen too many times now: Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Spiral Staircase etc. The Wild Bunch struck me as much worse than my previous memory of it. It annoyed me a lot of the time. Some people really slated the new version of Total Recall but I thought it was fairly decent. The Amazing Spiderman also was better than expected.
