World Cinema Guide: Europe- Selected Countries (100 Greatest Films 1929-2005)

This is the final part of the World Cinema Guide: all 3952 films are now listed on this blog.

The title above says ‘Selected Countries’ because these are the minor film-producing nations of this continent- the ones where I could find less than 20 acclaimed films in total. Other more major film-producing nations from Europe have their own country entry: check the labels at the right of this paragraph and the many posts entitled ‘World Cinema….’

When I say ‘greatest’ in the title above I mean ‘most critically acclaimed, based on a consensus of opinion’ and for details of how I established that - and why this list only goes up to 2005 - please see ‘World Cinema Guide: Introduction’.

Within this list there is in effect a ‘best of the best’ list: the most critically acclaimed 10-20% of films from this country are marked with a *.

Note: There was one film from Greenland in the list and I’ve included it here in teh Europe section because Greenland is, as Wikipedia says, 'an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark'.

I thought I'd add this since the split between ‘action’ and 'non action' in Hong Kong cinema is fairly well defined, and fans of one may well not be fans of the other.

1. ‘Action films’ means martial arts films, plus crime thrillers of the type directed by John Woo.

2. ‘Arthouse, and other genres’ takes in critically acclaimed directors like Wong Kar Wai, Ann Hui and Stanley Kwan, but also the best ‘non action’ genre films (usually horror or comedy) as well as one or two documentaries. Some of these films may have action elements but they’re not ‘pure action’ and they concentrate on script, character inter-action, etc rather than things like gunplay.
